Note to marketing: You should probably read those lines outloud instead of wasting your time making alien Albas.

American Anime Awards

Check out this behind the scenes coverage of the first-ever American Anime Awards.

I fully admit I'm not up to speed on anime knowledge and had to cram the days leading up to the show. At the awards it was a bit intimidating because all these other reporters and outlets knew anime and manga backwards and forwards. Sounds easy, right? Wrong. I had to be able to spot the voice actors for the different anime shows. Voice actors! Not only was I not familiar with the shows and the characters, I had to recognize the faces of the people who voiced them. Not Easy. But we winged it and I think it turned out okay. The one funny thing that happened was with the first guy interviewed in the video, Vic Mignogna (Fullmetal Alchemist). Leading up to the interview, I could NOT say his name for the life of me.

Me: How do you say his name?
Cameraman: Mig-yana
Me: Migana
Cameraman: Mig-yana
Me: Mignya
Cameraman: Mig-yana
Me: Mignanya
Cameraman: Mig-yaaaanaaa
Me: Migyaaaanga

You get the idea.

The only time I got it right was when I actually interviewed him. Which, of course, they cut from the video. PS — Vic won. And really, aren't we all winners? Well, except for the people that lost. Suckas!

NYC: Come Get Some Fresh Meat

If you're in New York today you must come by the SVA gallery today between 6-8 for the student mini comics show. I was lucky enough to meet a lot of the kids a few weeks back, and there are some good cartoonists out there.

It's at the Visual Arts Gallery
601 W. 26st st. 15th floor

VIDEO: Who's That Handsome Devil?

Why, it's Calvin Reid, bigshot editor at PWCW and one of the nicest guys around. Check out this video interview with him from the Thursday before the New York Comic Con started. We chatted right after the graphic novel conference about trends in the comics industry. Check it!

Brian K. Vaughan in Complex Magazine

The new issue of Complex Magazine hit the stands this week. In it, not only can you find a cool story about James Franco and Spider-Man 3, but you can also find my very first print magazine byline. I wrote a profile on some guy named Brian K. Vaughan. Perhaps you've heard of him?

The piece was trimmed down significantly, which gave me a taste of my own editing medicine. The story was written more for the Complex reader demo, not hardcore comics fans like you. Yes, you. But you do get some cool original photography of BKV. Go to your local B&N and pick one up.

FRESHMEAT: One Week From Today

Once a year the Illustration and Cartooning students at SVA have a mini comics show, and every year it's awesome. If you're in the area, you should really check it out. It's got great energy and you get a chance to meet a lot of very talented creators. I met 25 or so of them a few weekends ago when I did portfolio reviews for them, and there are some very promising students out there. This event always sneaks up on me, so I'm posting this so it won't sneak up on you:

Freshmeat 2007

Top Shelf Announces 2008 Schedule

This weekend Top Shelf Comix announced their '08 publishing schedule, and boy is it a doozy. The whole list is here, but some highlights include:

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 3: Century 1 of 3
By Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill
The third volume detailing the exploits of Miss Wilhelmina Murray and her extraordinary colleagues, Century, is a 216-page epic spanning almost a hundred years. Divided into three 72-page chapters -- each a self-contained narrative to avoid frustrating cliff-hanger delays between episodes -- this monumental tale takes place in three distinct eras, building to an apocalyptic conclusion occurring in our own current twenty-first century.

Dogs Day End
By Brian Wood and Nikki Cook (not Cox, sorry!)
Following up on the time-honored adage "you can't go home again", Dogs Day End details the personal journey of 30-year-old Andrew Maguire, pulled back to the small upstate hometown of his childhood by his mother as she enters the final stages of cancer. Once back, he revisits the demons of his youth: his estranged father, resentful ex-buddies, and his jilted high school sweetheart. As the twin pressures of the past and the present threaten to bury him, Andrew makes an all-or-nothing decision to come to terms with it all.

Too Cool To Be Forgotten
By Alex Robinson
Andy Wicks is a forty-something father of two who's making one final attempt to quit smoking: hypnosis. He's skeptical it will work but is stunned that when he emerges from his trance, he's fifteen years old - and it's 1985! Is he doomed to relive the worst four years of his life or will this second go-round finally give him the answers he's been missing all his life? If nothing else he'll finally get to ask out Marie Simone from history class...

Video: Me + Pierre Bernard from Late Night with Conan O'Brien

At the New York Comic-Con I ran into Pierre Bernard, graphic designer and star of the Conan segment, Pierre Bernard's Recliner of Rage. I knew he was a big comics fan and I love his segements so I had to grab a word with him. Watch him speak on collectibles and also co-hosting the American Anime Awards. Behind the scenes video of the Anime Babes included.

Busy Weekend

Saturday night I, along with all the other cool kids, went out to Rocketship for the Adrian Tomine party. Expectations were high, and this boy's expectations were met.

Sunday I went down to the School of Visual Arts to do portfolio reviews for juniors and seniors in the Art and Cartooning department. I'd never done it before but was asked to come this year — as the Deputy Art Director from Complex Magazine, not Comic Foundry. It was quite a time as I got to check out all the cool talents of tomorrow. While wearing my magazine hat, I looked at things from an editorial illustration perspective, so I didn't focus as much on the comics. I did, however, pick up Inkstains and Gutter Magazine, two of the students' comic anthologies. That said, there were some great illustrators out there. I saw a lot of books so I can't remember them all off the top of my head, but this guy Ulysses had a very cool style, and so did Thomas Pitilli.

Other judges included Bill Jemas (360 ep), Randy Chang (Bodega), Brendan Burford (Syncopated), Jim Salicrup (Papercutz), James Killen (B&N), some people from Marvel, DC, Scholastic and more...
