Minx Case Resolved

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Remember way back in May when indie creator Andrea Grant and DC were going head-to-head over the use of the title "Minx"? Well, according to a statement from Grant it's over:

"You all know about my little DC Comics trademark war over the word MINX…which was featured in the New York Post back in May. It took some time but I am pleased to announce that the dispute has been amicably resolved, thanks to all the amazing press we got and my wonderful lawyers.

"My book title will remain ‘Andrea Grant’s Minx’ and I want to thank all my friends and comic book colleagues for all the support."

Sounds like a win in my book, kiddies.

WIRED LOVES COMICS

I just picked up the latest issue of Wired Magazine.

It has not one, but TWO great comic references this month.

The first is a full page devoted to Shooting War. Very pretty Dan Goldman images.

The second is an 8-page feature on Gizmodo, fully illustrated by Jae Lee. I guess he has time to work on it since the Stephen King (Peter David) book isn't exactly setting speed records.

NEW SONY EBOOK READER CAN DISPLAY COMICS

It'll playback DRM'd books you can purchase through the Connect Bookstore (more on that later), with titles provided by all the major publishing houses. But it's easy enough to use simple text, RTF, PDF (unprotected)), JPGs, GIFs, MP3s, and AAC files. It'll even do RSS feed...including some Gawker titles, thank you very much!

Yes, it'll playback greyscale images, or music files from its Memory Stick, or SD card. (Yes, SD card) The greyscale images look all right.

Katharine McPhee on Wonder Woman

American Idol star Katharine McPhee on Wonder Woman rumors, via, Entertainment Weekly:
As far as them being concerned about Wonder Woman being my first movie, I think it would be a huge mistake for me to attempt to tackle a role like that for my debut. I really want to make smart choices, and I don't think that would be a smart choice. A lot of times, regardless of whether you're a blockbuster actress, those kinds of movies fail.

Comic Foundry on IFC Tomorrow!

The Independent Film Channel was at Comic-Con once again and their special documentary feature is going to air tomorrow!

Last year in IFC's inaugural trip to Comic-Con, Comic Foundry was part of one of the three groups of people they had lead the docu. (part 2 of this is viewable here). This year they had a new format with host Matt Singer experiencing his very first con. Even though we weren't in the spotlight, CF still made a brief appearance, as did our Students of the Unusual cohorts, Pat and Terry. In fact, it's their cool art that makes up the IFC intro credits.

Here are the next scheduled broadcasts:
Fri, Sep. 15 03:25 PM ED

Tue, Sep. 19 - 12:00 PM EDT

Sat, Sep. 23 - 12:35 PM EDT

Super Sexy Heroines

I get bunches of MySpace requests every day, but this one caught my eye: SuperSexyHeroines.com. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

So I checked it out.

At first glance I thought it was a porn site. But in doing a little research it's actually not a nudie site, but instead an online photo comic book. It's subscriber-based ($18.95 a month and:

"SuperSexyHeroines.com is NOT an adult website. There is no nudity, no bondage, and no anti-female suppressive theme to the website.

This website is strictly about Super Sexy Heroines, and their adventures battling evil, and more.

SuperSexyHeroines.com is however a very sexy website. It features some of the sexiest girls on the Internet wearing sexy and powerful outfits. Whilst there is absolutely no nudity or even implied nudity, our heroines will be wearing tight-fitting spandex costumes.

With regards to themes, there is no anti-female themes, no masochism, no bondage, and no overt physical abuse contained on this website.

The SuperSexyHeroines.com online live-action comic books feature the same values of female equality and depict the same strong and assertive and postitive female roles that are found in any Wonder Woman, Supergirl, or X-Men comic book found in comic book stores."

Here's a few examples of their work:
Super Woman
Super Woman 2
Super Woman 3

Also, here's a Casting Call and them looking for designers.

This is the first kind of site I can recall seeing, but in thinking about it I'm actually surprised there's not more of them.

GAWKER: SPIDEY SYNERGY

Gossip site Gawker has a look at TODAY'S NEW YORK POST. In it, is a missed opportunity for Spidey synergy, between the free Spider-Man comic and the sentencing of "the Spidey Slayer," a man who hacked his wife to death with a samurai sword.

Another American Born Chinese Post

Not a review.

I just finished reading Gene Yang's American Born Chinese this morning. I'll be honest — I loved it.

I say this not feeling obligated because I'm half Chinese or because First Second provided me with the book. I say this because it's very fun and often funny. It's quick too — I felt like I just breezed through the whole thing.

It comes out in comics stores this week and is already available in the book market.

It also seems like I'm the 100th person to make such a post in the past few days.

Video Blog #3 - Scott McCloud at Rocketship

Here's my third video blog of the season. In this episode we travel back to Brooklyn to check out Scott McCloud's book release party for Making Comics. McCloud has reached icon status for writing definitive works in Understanding Comics and Reinventing Comics and looks to further that with his latest book.

My geekout moment of the nite: McCloud mentioned that he recognized me my videos. Now that is reach.

Watch the video. I ask McCloud a few questions, as well as Rocketship owners Mary and Alex

When you're done, why don't you mosey on over to Comic Foundry, why dontcha?

Weekend wrap-up: Rocketship

Rocketship!

CF skipped Baltimore but we landed at Rocketship this past weekend for Scott McCloud's book release party for MAKING COMICS. It was an absolutely fantastic time, as we chatted up NeilAlien, Brian Cronin from Comics Should be Good, Matt and Bill from MoCCA, Gina from First Second, Calvin from PW, Alex and Mary, and a whole gaggle of other people that I'm neglecting to mention.

Expect a video blog tomorrow!

Fun to Watch

Quick Chris Ware interview in Time Out NY

There's a CHRIS WARE interview in Time Out New York.

How does it feel to be in the same show as R. Crumb and Charles Schulz?
Schulz is the only author I’ve been reading since childhood that I still appreciate every bit as much as I did then. He was the first to create a sympathetic cartoon character—one you cared about as well as cared through.

Lois Lane to get her own movie?

According to this site, it's true.

I have many problems with this. 1) Kate Bosworth is not a believable brunette. 2) She's not a believable Lois Lane. She showed no spark, no energy, no aggression. And no, looking emaciated does not count.

My beef? I know a lot of reporters, and she does not look like a reporter. She doesn't seem credible to me. Also, there's no way a girl who looks like she's 19 won the Pulitzer Prize. Art thou kidding? I can certainly see the appeal of a Lois movie. It'll draw a nice female audience plus all the fanboys who'd see it because it's Lois. I'd be even more for it if there was a different Lois, though.
